The European Christian Political Movement (ECPM) is very concerned by the reports it has received from the massive demonstrations in Chisinau, Moldova.
ECPM urges all involved parties to refrain from any kind of violence during the protest and is shocked by the reports of several fatal casualties in the last hours. Again, we urge all involved parties to cease the violence at once!
The demonstrations are a clear result of the elections on the fifth of April and the huge disappointment that many people felt after the announcement of the final election results.
Currently, there are large crowds in Chisinau with people who are questioning the results of the elections. The ECPM urges President Voronin and the authorities to only use peaceful means in dealing with the protesters
As a result of the large distrust of the elections outcome, a thorough and independent investigation on the elections is necessary.
We call the power and opposition to start negotiations and resolve this issue peacefully and in the interest of the people of Moldova.
ECPM also calls on the European Union to play a more active role in the current situation in order stabilize and monitor the situation in Moldova.
On behalf of the ECPM,
Peeter Vosu
Chairman
