Interview with David Campanale
Name: David Campanale
Age: 43
Country: UK
Civil state: married
Employment: Journalist, BBC World News
Political party: Christian Peoples Alliance
1. How did you get involved in politics?
From early on in life, I sensed a call to serve God in politics. So, it was a mix between having the skills and having a passion. While studying politics at Oxford I planned to first become a missionary - but heard God call me straight into political service. I joined the Social Democratic Party and within a year was elected for the SDP/Liberal Alliance as one of London's youngest local councillors. While working for the SDP think-tank The Tawney Society - and serving in Parliament the Liberal Party MPs - I read about Christian Democracy and determined then, in 1986, that I would form such a party in God's timing. With the advent of PR and also the UK resisting any pro-life measures, I helped bring together Christian politicians to form the Movement for Christian Democracy in 1991. I was Vice-Chair. Then, in 1999, we formed the Christian Peoples Alliance as a political party. I became the founding chairman and then Federal President.
2. What is your role in your party?
I sit on the CPA Federal Executive and handle all communications, such as web design, messages to members, news releases and newsletters. I am also Acting International Secretary of CPA
3. What is your vision on Europe?
I am praying for God to bring revival to Europe, that both individuals and nations turn back to Christ and acknowledge his Lordship. I see the EU as needing redemption through the Cross.
4. Why did your party become a member of ECPM? What binds members together?
The CPA wants to work with all Christian political expressions of witness to Christ. We are glad to be associated with co-labourers in Europe. Our vision is to see the wider family of Christian Democracy rediscover their Christian roots.
5. What are your hobbies?
I enjoy spending time with my family, kicking a ball around with my sons. I like to travel.
6. Is there a Bible passage that has got your heart?
I am focussed on the Book of Daniel especially at this time. It is all about God calling a national leader of a non-Christian nation - Babylon - to acknowledge Him. It is a model for all nations and political leaders - that the Lord wants them to seek His favour, His justice and His rule.
7. What or who annoys you?
At this time, it is Christians who see the CPA as a waste of time because we are not successful in having MPs or regional representatives! The Bible says not to despise the day of small beginnings. We see success as Mother Teresa did - in being faithful.
8. By what or who do you get inspired?
I am inspired by the whole family of believers who persevered in the faith of Christ, despite the challenges of their age.
