Terrorists in Libanon must be disarmed

libanon_jul06Monday 31 July 2006 14:20

Israel has been under unprovoked attacks from Gaza and across the northern border during the past weeks. Many innocent people have lost their lives and hundreds have been wounded in the war started by the terrorist groups. For both groups of aggressors, Hamas and Hezbollah, the goal of the attacks has been the total destruction of Israel.

A group of 8 Hamas terrorists attacked Israel on June 25 after digging about a kilometre long tunnel under the border between Israel and Palestinian controlled Gaza. Two Israeli soldiers were killed and one kidnapped during the attack. Israel replied with air strikes on several infrastructure targets and terrorist facilities. Israel also made a ground operation, entering Gaza by Tanks.

About two weeks later, on July 12 Hezbollah militants crossed over to Israel, killed 5 and kidnapped 2 Israeli soldiers. Another two people were killed in another attack.
Israel replied with military operation within hours.

Unfortunately the attacks across these borders have not been exceptional or even rare. The groups have expressed their intentions clearly: to eliminate Israel. Unfortunately it has not been just a threat but they have been constantly working towards these goals.

According to Yuval Diskin of Israeli Intelligence, Hamas has smuggled in during 8 months after Israel retreated from Gaza 11 tons of explosives, 10 000 rifles, 1600 pistols and lots of other weapons. Hamas has shot over 600 Kassams during 8 months after Israeli retreated from Gaza to Israel.

Similar situation was with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Hezbollah was created in 1982 to realize the radical Shiite-Islamic doctrine of Iran’s spiritual leader Ayatollah Khomeini: to struggle against Israel until the “liberation of Jerusalem” and annihilation of Israel. Hezbollah has its own armoured forces that are far bigger than the army of Lebanon. The weapons and funds for it come from Iran, the know-how, directions and training come mostly from Syria. In 2003 the missiles in the possession of Hezbollah was estimated about 12 000. The missiles are capable of reaching about 50 kilometres and some even more. (Hezbollah, 2003 by Intelligence and Terrorist Information Center at the Center of Special Studies).

These facts tell clearly that the threats from the terrorist organizations are not only words but have been confirmed by actions. Some politicians have blamed Israel of use of disproportional power. We can talk about proportionality in case of disagreement between countries or people. In case of terrorists who have decided to eliminate a country and are constantly using heavy weapons against civilians, proportionality is not a correct term. Terrorist needs to be disarmed and isolated from the victims.

Israel has every right to protect its citizens and country. The terrorist infrastructures need to be destroyed in order to get peace in the region. ECPM supports Israel in this difficult time. We also hope and pray that less civilian casualties would be on both sides.
