Estonian Christian Democrats against gay parade

logoEKRPTuesday 08 August 2006 15:25
The Estonian Christian Democrats has objected to a gay parade scheduled for Saturday in Tallinn and called on the city government to ban the event.

"Many public opinion polls show that Estonian society does not support open propaganda of homosexuality. So why should we, against our will, be an audience in a show by a small interest group?" the Estonian Christian Democrats said in a statement on Tuesday.

The organizers of the same-sex culture week, which started in Tallinn on Monday, are sending "the wrong message as to what should be called normal and what not," it says.

"We believe that the profanation of the institution of family is an attack on the pillars of society. The organization of a family picnic during the homo-week sounds especially ironic," it says.

The same-sex culture week entitled Tallinn Pride 2006 started in Tallinn on Monday to place a special emphasis on the themes of same-sex family and gay partnership. The week is to end with a gay parade in the center of Tallinn on Saturday and a Sunday picnic of same-sex families in the Kadriorg Park, not far from the presidential residence.
