Monday 23 October 2006 09:05 In the beautiful surroundings of the mountains of Risan, the ECPM in collaboration with Philia MInistries organized a conference called "Ethics in politics and integrity of a politician" in from 20-22 October. During this conference representatives of important political parties discussed topics as how to implement Christian values within the fields of politics and how to fight against the corruption. The parties decided to form a local network formed out of different Montenegrin political parties to develop those values within the Montenegrin society.
Montenegro recently declared itself independent from Serbia. With its 600,000 inhabitants it is not only the smallest country of the former Republic of Yugoslavia , but also the youngest country of the world at this moment. Therefore we can say this was the first conference about this topic in ever.
The main speakers were Leo van Doesburg, South Eastern Representative of the ECPM, Sinisa Nazadin from the Philia Ministries and David Murray chairman of the Ridley Hall Foundation in Cabridge, a group focus on the Christian ethical through the business world. He also worked as Deputy Chairman of Transparency International the anti-corruption coalition in the from 2000-2005.
David Murray discussed the developments of corruption world wide. He showed the corruption index and the impact of those figures. It is sad to notice that Serbia-Montenegro scored quite high in this index and especially poor people seemed to be the victims of the corruption practices. He showed the levels of corruption and steps to form a "clean state". Also he showed the code of ethics he developed based on Biblical principles and how this is applied. Many issues were recognizable to the participants although some of the participants were wondering if these situations really could be changed.
Leo van Doesburg followed with how the impact of ECPM could be by both developing to network of Christian democracy in Europe as the development of a local political movement in Montenegro in order to train Montenegrin politicians in implementing Christian principles in their unique sphere of influence. He discussed the Christian philosophy of human being: The earth as Gods creation, the human being created like Gods image with unique gifts and abilities to re-create in the society and work as collaboration with God like the way how God brought the animals to Adam to see how he named them. Besides he spoke on the evil that came into the world by the human being by turning away from God and the salvation plan of God by sending Jesus for our sins and the new perspective of life of expecting the Kingdom of God and the eternal perspective of life. "Being Christians mean "followers of Jesus" and to form a Christ-like character. As followers of Jesus, we should follow His example by being Light and Salt in the society. After this he discussed the eight guiding principles of ECPM.
After the break there was a session of questions and answers on the themes that were discussed. There were many practical questions about the ECPM network about the membership of political organizations. Also there was a need to form a local network formed out of different Montenegrin political parties to develop Christian values within the Montenegrin society. After this we discussed about the further steps that should be taken. Sinisa Nazadin was appointed officially as contact person from the ECPM for . He will organize more meetings with the people that were present to discuss a clear plan for next year. First step was to organize first study meetings on the materials provided from the ECPM.
Last but not least the people could give their commends on the conference. A few of them: "This is the first time that these themes are discussed in Montenegro and getting back to our roots of Christian principles is very important", "Although I do not consider myself as a Christian, I believe that these values are important for the development of a healthy Montenegrin society", "We totally agree with the principles as presented during these days", "I do not only want to be involved, but actively involved in developing a Christian movement in Montenegro. I already read about the ECPM on the website and I already subscribed myself for the congress".
