Christian values and Christian democracy in the Republic of Moldova

Monday 20 November 2006 20:51
“You all know the example with a child closing his eyes; he thinks that others can not see him. This is also the case with your belief in God. You cannot close your eyes on the fact that people are weak and sinful and think that they are in the centre of the universe. If you are not aware of the evil side inside, you will never be able to improve”. This was the introduction of Iurie Rosca, President of the Christian Democratic People’s Party (PPCD) and Vice-Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova during a conference organized by the ECPM in collaboration with PPCD where 30 young people discussed about the theme: “Christian values and Christian-democracy in politics”

The conference was opened by Vladimir Plamadeala, President of the European Foundation and Coordinator of the International Department of Christian Democratic People’s Party and also organizer of the conference. After this each participant introduced each other and explained their expectations. The main expectations were to learn more what the Christian values are and how they can be implemented in politics. After this, Vlad Cubreacov, Chairman of the Parliamentarian Group of the PPCD and Ex-Director of the Religious Department of the Government of the Republic of Moldova told the audience about the rich Christian history of the country and the importance Christianity has in the development of the society. This was followed by an interactive discussion about the European accession. Moldova changed its strategical focus towards Europe which was a main change towards structural reforms in the Moldavian society, but what could Moldova bring to Europe? Isn’t it true that the European Union will also benefit if Moldova access in the future? Especially taking into consideration the strategic position of the country and the economic manipulation of Russia?

The next speaker was Iurie Rosca who discussed about “Youngster and Christian-Democratic principles.” He explained the importance of the implementation of Christian values in the political field and the way that we have to recognize the evil sides in ourselves and to fight against old communistic structures. He told about the start of beginnings of the Party in Moldova, 18 years ago in the time that Gorbatchov allowed other parties to participate and the way how the Party grew in the most important opposition Party of the Republic of Moldova. In an interactive way, he explained the challenges he had in being opposition to old mentality and old structures. Also he hoped that the time will come when PPCD really will take place in the Government so that real reforms can be realized and the society could be changed.
