Christian-democracy achieves good result in Dutch elections

_MG_3598.jpgThursday 23 November 2006 15:03
Although the focus of the international media was on the results of the leftist and extremist parties, the elections in the national parliamentary elections at 22 November in The Netherlands showed good results for both CDA and ChristenUnie. While the CDA with small losses remained the largest party, the ChristenUnie doubled its seats (3 to 6).

Due to the fact that the CDA and PvdA (Labour party) do not have enough seats for a majority, creating a government will prove difficult. Both the Socialist Party and the ChristenUnie are possible third parties to make a majority government possible.

The ChristianUnion is very grateful for the positive results of the parliamentary elections of November, 22. The ChristianUnion doubled its parliamentary seats from 3 to 6. Party leader André Rouvoet called this historical outcome for Christian-social politics in the Netherlands a "dream result"¯.

Although the elections have resulted in a very diverse political landscape, the Dutch voters did make a clear choice for Christian politics, but with the addition of a clear social policy. It is this explicit Christian-social voice of the ChristianUnion that is appreciated in a time where popular center parties lost votes to identity based ones. This position makes the ChristianUnion a wanted partner in the coalition talks to form a new government.
