The ChristianUnion parliamentary group has agreed with the final text of the coalition agreement. This agreement was reached after the negotiations of CDA (Christian-democrats), PvdA (social-democrats) and the ChristianUnion to form a new government in the Netherlands. ChristianUnion-leader André Rouvoet will be vice-Prime Minister in the new cabinet.
The parliamentary group has consented the agreement, because it recognizes very much of the Christian-social profile of the ChristianUnion in the coalition agreement. Strong support for youth, families and education and special attention to vulnerable groups of society will be important elements of the new government policies according to Rouvoet.
The positioning of Rouvoet in the new cabinet shows the serious commitment of the ChristianUnion to this coalition. ChristianUnion MP Arie Slob runs now for the chairmanship of the parliamentary group. The group will make a decision on the chairmanship shortly.
The agreement is a historic moment for the Netherlands and the ChristianUnion itself. For the first time in decades, there will be a Christian majority in the Dutch government. Until now the party had been active locally and nationally as a parliamentary opposition party. It is for the first time in the history of the ChristianUnion that the party will take part in the Dutch government.
