Monday 05 March 2007 13:02 The support for Estonian Christian Democrats (EKD) grew 1.5
times at the Parliamentary Election on March 4, but not enough
to exceed the threshold of 5%. EKD had 1.7% votes which was a big
jump comparing to the 1.1% received last time.
EKD made a broad election campaign for the first time of its
existence. The campaign was started by outdoor advertisement in
Tallinn and carried on mainly on the radio, local newspapers and
the Internet. During the last two weeks EKD was strongly present on
the two main commercial TV channels as well. It became widely known
through the process.
The Christian party was a part of all the major debates on the
public service television and radio and also on the main news radio
“Kuku”. The private print media, the major daily
newspapers ignored EKD totally, that could be one of the reasons
the party could not get over the threshold. The rating of the party
was very low at the beginning of the campaign. It has a much better
position now.
62% of the citizens participated in the election. Reform Party was
the winner, taking 31 seats of the 101 in the Parliament. Center
Party (Keskerakond) got 29 seats, with very little chance to be
included in the government. The Union of Pro Patria and Res Publica
(IRL) got 19 seats with a good chance to join the winner in the
coalition government. Social Democrats (10 seats) and Greens (6
seats) participate in the coalition negotiations too.
The Christian Democrats will not give up but are looking forward
with hope to the next, local election in two years time, to get
more support and grow before the next Parliamentary
election.
