Monday 21 May 2007 18:54 Last friday the newly elected president of the French Republic Nicolas Sarkozy appointed Christine Boutin as minister of Housing and Cities in the government of prime minister Fillon. Christine Boutin is a former mayor and a member of parliament for the Forum of Social Republicans, which is associated to Sarkozy's UMP.| Sarkozy and Boutin |
Boutin became known for her principal opposition to the PACS law, which could eventually allow civil unions for people of the same sex. The PACS law was adopted by the left wing majority of the day, in spite of the opposition of the Rally For the Republic (RPR) and the Union for the French Democracy (UDF).
Boutin contributed to stopping initiatives to allow adoption by gay couples, by arguing for the right of the child rather than a so called right to a child. In this she was supported by some socialists who had voted in favour of PACS as well, since they did not want to allow gay marriage or adoption by gay couples.
In december of 2001 she was excluded from the UDF as she ran for president in the april 2002 elections, while Francois Bayrou was also in the race as official UDF candidate. On 16 June 2002 she was re-elected as member of parliament, she resides with the UMP group in parliament. During the referendum campaign for the European Constitution she campaigned against the proposed constitution. In 2006 she decided not to run for president in 2007 but support Sarkozy.
Since 1994 Boutin is president of the Alliance For the Right to Life and since 1995 she is a member of the Pontifical Council for the Family created by the late pope John Paul II and as such consults Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, the Vatican minister of Family.
The ECPYN secretariat has send a letter of congratulation to Christine Boutin.
