Monday 25 June 2007 16:48 The European Christian Political Movement congratulates chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) with the treaty that has been agreed upon under her leadership. The new treaty is closer to the citizens of the EU member states thanks to a better implementation of the subsidiarity principle; good governance, close to the people. The treaty is therefore also closer to the Christian-democrat idea of democracy and good government.
The new treaty not only abandoned the symbolic language of a constitution, it also recognized in its content that the EU consists of independent member states and it is not able to replace them. Many people in Europe approve the development of the EU as a necessary way to tackle common problems, but they would like to keep a recognizable national government with the power to solve problems which can be dealt with at the national level. The new treaty meets these wishes.
The ECPM hopes that the following IGC will stay close to this future direction of the EU.
