Wednesday 22 August 2007 10:15 Brussels - The European Union summoned the governor of the American state Texas, Rick Perry, to stop executions in his state. Today will take place the 400th execution of Texas since the reintroduction of the death penalty in 1976.The governor announced that the execution of Wednesday will proceed. The 32 year old Johnny Ray Conner will be executed because he was found guilty of the death of a shop-assistant. According to Perry an execution is a suitable penalty for this criminal fact.
Since the reintroduction of the death penalty in 1976 the United States carried out more than 1000 executions. On last Tuesday there was a 46 year old man executed in Oklahoma with the help of a fatal injection. Frank Welch was found guilty of a murder and rape of a pregnant woman. This execution will be the 34th execution of this year in the whole US.
The EU is under any circumstance against the death penalty and summones the rest of the world continuously to stop the death penalty or at least to come to a moratorium.
