ECPM disappointed in PACE decision on "creationism report"

Vignette_Logo_PACE_75ppiMonday 08 October 2007 17:38

The ECPM is disappointed that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted the 'creationism' report. The voting results show that MP's from all European political parties in the PACE voted in favour or against it; showing that this is not merely a political issue.

The ECPM points to the fact that ideas cannot be separated from the people who adhere them. As MP Fischer clearly pointed out in his speech; there is no single evidence in the report that people who adhere creationism above evolutionism pose a threat to human rights (as stated in the first resolution in the report). The ECPM stresses the reverse; following this report would be a threat to scientific freedom, the freedom of education and freedom of opinion; all values laid down in various human rights declarations. According to this report the state would interfere in all these freedoms by imposing one specific worldview as 'the correct one' and banning all others to obscurity.

As Christian-democrats we believe that the state has to respect the proper independence and interdependence of these institutions and sphere's in society. As laid down in the ECPM basic declaration, we would rather advocate that the state focuses at promoting justice by (among others) defending and implementing these already mentioned human rights.

The PACE now officially calls national parliaments to adopt this decision too. This call underlines the need for a clear Christian-democratic voice in Europe; on all political levels. We call all Christian-democrats and all other politicians to protect these basic freedoms in society and resist attempts in national parliaments to follow this PACE decision
