Christian-democracy continues its growth in UK local elections

ban_cpa.jpgTuesday 09 May 2006 14:59
The Christian Peoples Alliance, the first and only Christian-democrat party in the UK, was founded in 2000. In 2002 they achieved in the UK the hard 'first past the post' system to get their first councillor elected. Now he will be joined by two more who were elected in the ward he stood. Overcoming entrenched Labour opposition in Canning Town South - in London's most deprived community - Alan Craig was joined by Simeon Ademolake and Denise Stafford. (The area used to be represented by Labour's first leader, Keir Hardie. Nationally, the CPA fielded 70 candidates across 17 boroughs and district councils in yesterday's elections. Speaking after the final results were announced late on Friday afternoon, Peter Flower, President of the CPA said: '"The political landscape is gradually changing and this dramatic result, God-willing, will be repeated by Christians elsewhere. All it needed was one excellent Councillor, Alan Craig, to serve his community with tireless commitment and compassion over the past four years. The voters of Newham saw the difference one CPA voice made on the Council and they clearly wanted more of the same. We are delighted at this outcome and now want others to repeat that success elsewhere, using the CPA brand". The party fielded candidates in the May 2005 General Elections as well as in the EU and London elections in June 2004 when the party won over 240,000 votes in London and the south of England. The CPA is a Christian Democratic party and has the backing of Christian Democratic parties in Europe, including Holland, Norway, Sweden and Finland.
