Israel Conference: Celebrating EU-Israel Relations and their Future

On the 6th of December 2018 ECPM is organizing together with the European Coallition for Israel (ECI) a conference at the European Parliament with the title Celebrating EU-Israel Relations and their Future. The event will be hosted by ECPM MEPs Bas Belder, Arne Gericke and Branislav Škripek.

The first segment of the event will have the title: EU, Israel and European Jewry - the next fifteen years.
It will be the 15th anniversary symposium of the ECI, an organization founded in 2003 to combat anti-Semitism in Europe and promote good relations between the European Union and Israel. We will examine:

  • The current attitude in Europe towards the Jewish communities and the State of Israel
  • How EU-Israel relations have evolved in the last fifteen years.
  • The outlook of EU-Israel relations for the next 15 years

Among the speakers will be:

  • Leading EU-personalities
  • Experts
  • Jewish and Christian community leaders

The second segment of the event will be titled: The future of Israel – EU relations and from Horizon 2020 to Horizon Europe.
It will focus on the possibilities of collaboration between Israel and the EU in the field of innovation as the Union is developing its new research and innovation programme: Horizon Europe.

  • Representatives of the Mission of Israel to the EU and NATO

Joshua S. Reinstein

President, Israel Allies Foundation

Director, Knesset Christian Allies Caucus

 Josh Reinstein has been the Director of the Knesset Christian Allies Caucus since its inception on January 5th 2004, and is also the President of the Israel Allies Foundation. Mr. Reinstein is the producer and founder of the hit TV show, Israel Now News. Israel Now News is a half an hour weekly news magazine that is broadcast to 35 million viewers in 191 countries around the world. He has recently launched a second TV show called Land of the Bible, which appears weekly on the Daystar network. Mr. Reinstein also owns and operates JSR International Marketing, an international marketing and public relations firm based in Israel. Josh Reinstein grew up in Dallas, Texas and Toronto, Canada. He is an honors graduate of the University of Western Ontario, where he earned a degree in Political Science. He served as a tank gunner in the elite 188 unit of the Israel Defense Forces Armored Corps. He currently lives in Jerusalem with his wife, Rebekah and four children. Mr. Reinstein was named as one of the “50 most influential Jews in the world” by the Jerusalem Post.

 

Shai Newman

Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at Compedia.

He is responsible for technology and innovation in the company. Shai initiated and managed Compedia's cooperation projects with Microsoft, Rare/Nintendo, News Corp, Intel, Samsung, Siemens and others. Shai has started programming at an early age and has a strong R&D background in development of advanced platforms, expert systems, AR technologies and training systems and was a senior programmer and large projects manager at the IAF prior to becoming the CTO of Compedia. Shai is the Author of 3 patents in the field of AR, VR and visual computing. Shai has led Compedia's participation in all of its European research projects and is now acting as Technological Director in LAW-TRAIN (Horizon 2020). He was also a member of the MY-WAY (http://www.mywaystartup.eu/ ) advisory board that promoted entrepreneurship for young adults in Europe. His educational multi-disciplinary background and degrees include: Mathematics, Marketing and management and computer science (with Distinctions).

Katharina von Schnurbein, European Commission, Coordinator on combating Antisemitism
Katharina von Schnurbein was appointed the first European Commission Coordinator on combating Antisemitism in December 2015. Prior to this, she worked for five years as advisor to EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on the dialogue with religions and non-confessional organisations. Katharina started working for the European Commission in 2002 as press officer for the EU Delegation in Prague. Prior to these posts, Katharina worked for the Chairman of the European Affairs Committee at the German Bundestag in Berlin as well as a for an international crisis management consultancy.

Walid Abu-Haya, Deputy Chief, Mission of Israel to the EU & NATO
Walid Abu-Haya is the new Deputy Head of the Mission of Israel to the EU and NATO in Brussels. He has a long career as a diplomat in Israel and has served as the Director for Palestinian Affairs & Regional Cooperation Department, and various other roles within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2000. Mr Abu-Haya is a native Arab-speaker and holds a MA in Political Science from Haifa University.

Tomas Sandell, Founding Director, European Coalition for Israel
Tomas Sandell is the Founding Director of the European Coalition for Israel, which was set up in 2003, as the only non-Jewish advocacy group active both in the European Parliament in Brussels and at the UN in New York. Mr Sandell has worked previously as a consultant, journalist and NGO professional in various EU related issues since 1994.

Raya Kalenova, Executive Vice-President, European Jewish Congress
Raya Kalenova is the Executive Vice-President and CEO of the European Jewish Congress (EJC). She is also a member of the Board of the World Holocaust Forum Foundation and represents the EJC at the World Jewish Restitution Organization and Claims Conference and Member of the Board of Directors of the Security and Crisis Center by EJC. Raya has also been very active in the past in different Jewish charities, such as Keren Hayessod, Wizo, Radio Judaica and Center Ben Gourion in Belgium (where she was elected as Vice President), Israel Bonds and many others.

MEP Heinz Becker, on behalf of the Austrian Presidency of Council of EU MEP
Heinz K. Becker (EPP) is an Austrian politician and member of the Austrian People's Party. He is a member of the EP Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and the EP Special Committee on Terrorism. Additionally, Mr Becker serves as a member of the European Parliament Intergroup on Trade Unions. Becker has previously worked on consultancy, media and advertising.

Andrew Tucker, Legal Counsel, European Coalition for Israel
Andrew Tucker is the ECI Legal Counsel and Director of Thinc (The Hague Initiative for International Co-operation). He studied law in Australia, UK and The Netherlands, and was a Fellow of the Law Faculty of the University of Melbourne from 1994 to 2001, and Research Associate at the TMC Asser Institute in The Hague from 1996-1998. Based in The Netherlands, he is Principal of Tucker & Associates and author of "Israel on Trial" (2018).
